Retrieving the vast treasure trove of data his father gathered for The Lima Project, the mission to find extra-terrestrial life out among the stars, Roy returns to Earth a changed man. You can watch the scene via THR below. However, we slowly see his Ad Astra worldview break down with each step in his journey. In its climactic, profound moments, when Pitt's astronaut Roy McBride finds his father Clifford (Tommy Lee Jones), alone and manic after decades aboard a spaceship stuck in the far reaches of our solar system, the two discover something more important than first contact with aliens. If we're truly alone, that means human life is more precious than we could imagine; that Earth, in its perfectly habitable orbit around the sun, is the most special planet in the universe, and that there won't be anyone or anything left to pick up the pieces if we destroy ourselves. Have no fear though, as we’re here to discuss not only what happened at the end of director James Gray’s Ad Astra, but also what it means in the entire structure of the larger story at work.

Yikesaroni. Ad Astra's lofty inspirations are undermined by a finale full of contrivances that defy both logic and gravity. Reviews of the film are mixed, with some expecting the movie to do well at the Oscars, while others aren't so forgiving, calling it a methodical, dragging affair. By the end of Ad Astra, the first thing he’s greeted with upon landing on Earth is a hand reaching out to help him, and he gladly accepts. Learning the truth about how much his father and SPACECOM truly value him as a person, Brad Pitt’s character is able to return home to Earth with a clear head, trying to make things right with his wife, and humanity at large. Out of desperation, the space program has sent Brad Pitt's character's father, along with a crew of astronauts, on a mission to find out, once and for all, if there is other life to be contacted out there in the universe. Many years later, Pitt is sent to confirm whether his father did indeed discover evidence of extraterrestrial beings. If you haven’t seen the film yet, return to Earth, and blast off once you’ve caught the film for yourself. Clifford is racked by guilt (for murdering his crewmates when they tried to return home) and shame (at being unable, all these years to find even a hint of any little green men out there amongst the stars).

This movie has the exact opposite of an after the credits scene — not only does it not have one once those names start rolling up on the screen, but the movie states "The End," once it's over.

I was hoping they'd play this track during the ending credits, but no dice. A deleted scene for Brad Pitt's Ad Astra would've given his character a slightly happier ending than the one shown in theaters. The Surge that threatens Earth, and life in all of the universe, was a colossal accident, not some sort of villainous plot on the elder McBride’s part. He keeps repeating to Roy, breathlessly, that he failed, he found nothing. He fights for The User. The universe is an unthinkably enormous place -- surely, surely there must be others out there. The film's marketing did well to hide exactly the precarious situations he'd be placed in as we saw him hurtling from orbit to the planet, experiencing difficulties in his rocket, and butting heads with hiscrew in what appeared to be interconnected events. There are no large chunks which make this jump to his rocket all the more silly. Also versed in Large Scale Aggressors, time travel, and Guillermo del Toro. I knew something special was going on when I saw a line of people at the Arclight dressed in 1920s clothes to see a showing. While  Ad Astra touts itself as a grounded film, the film has enough fantastic feats to firmly put it in the realm of science fiction. Roy, though, takes the crew out since he believes he can still talk some sense into Clifford, who's been orbiting Neptune, performing anti-matter experiments that are causing electrical surges throughout the galaxy, leading to catastrophes on Earth. Fox's Relationship Status Is Complicated, Don't Confuse DC Superheroes Static and Black Lightning, Justin Bieber Can’t Vote, So He Wants You to Vote on His Behalf, "The Korean Zombie" Earned His Nickname From His Exciting Fighting Style. What seems to start as a routine “mission into space” turns into a journey of emotional catharsis, with some punctuated moments of action.
What's even more laughable is that Roy doesn't have the fuel to make it to Earth, so he relies on the Neptune explosion to push him forward and use its momentum before firing the jets that will get him home.
What if there isn't any life in the universe but us? The Moon looks like a Newark Airport style tourist trap, with raiders fighting it out for resources.
